Flyers Lose Ugly in Boston Empty Flyers Lose Ugly in Boston

    Post by jedi17 Sat 14 Jan 2017, 7:26 pm

Too many turnovers in dangerous areas, too many needless penalties, too much Brad Marchand was the story of the afternoon as the Philadelphia Flyers fell, 6-3, to the Boston Bruins in a sloppily played match at TD Garden on Saturday.

Marchand compiled a five-point game for Boston, scoring shorthanded and empty net goals while assisting on three others. In the meantime, the Flyers were tagged for 11 giveaways to four for Boston, although both teams got the benefit of the doubt on a couple turnover.

The Bruins went 2-for-6 on the power play (one was off a lucky bounce) and the Flyers were 2-for-4 on the man advantage (also benefiting from a fortunate bounce on a broken play).

In addition to Marchand's two goals, the Bruins got tallies from David Krejci, Torey Krug, Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara. Philly got tallies from Pierre-Edouard Bellemare at even strength and from Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds on the power play.

Tuukka Rask stopped 21 of 24 shots to earn the win. Michal Neuvirth stopped 33 of 38 in a losing cause.

Activated from long-term injured reserve, Mark Streit returned to the Flyers' lineup and was paired with Radko Gudas (a semi-healthy scratch on Thursday). With those two returning, struggling second-year NHLer Shayne Gostisbehere, for the second time this season, was a healthy scratch. Veteran defenseman Nick Schultz also sat.

At 2:55 of the first period, the Flyers took a rare early lead. Bellemare nicely deflected a Provorov shot over Rask. VandeVelde got the secondary assist on Bellemare's third goal of the season and second in two games.

On the next shift, Neuvirth got some help from his goal post on a Brad Marchand shot that beat him cleanly. A Flyers own-zone turnover preceded it.

Nick Cousins nearly made it 2-0 at around the 5:30 mark as he deflected a shot that narrowly missed the top part of the net and went over. The Flyers then escaped defensive zone turnovers by Provorov and Raffl.

Philly went to the power play for the first time at 6:33 as David Pastrnak tripped Provorov in the neutral zone. The Flyers got sloppy early in the power play, as a 2-on-4 turned into an open lane as they left Riley Nash open for a side-angle shorthanded bid. The Flyers weren't so fortunate moments later as Couturier got a tough pass at the blueline and was stripped by Marchand, who went off on a breakaway. Shrugging off a desperation hook by Provorov, Marchand lost control of the puck but it dribbled in past a sprawling Neuvirth for a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 1-1. It was the NHL-worst 8th SHG Flyers have allowed. Had the puck not gone in, Marchand almost certainly would have been awarded a penalty shot.

Voracek had Rask caught on the other side the crease but hit the outside of the net with room on the short side. The Bruins then turned the puck over in their own end.

On the next shift after a TV timeout, Tim Schaller hit the post on a shot that Neuvirth appeared not to track until it was too late. Anton Blidh then put a shot through traffic on the net, but Neuvirth made the stop.

With 6:51 left in the first period, Manning got the gate for a cross-check on Austin Czarnik, driving him into the end boards. Neuvirth, bumped by David Backes, made a very tough save on a shot through traffic.

Play went to 4-on-3 at 16:27 as both Michael Del Zotto (interference) and Pastrnak (embellishment) were sent off on a play right in front of Neuvirth. No scoring chances of note developed either way apart from a shot that Rask awkwardly took up high (one game after leaving a game due to a minor injury on a shot up high).

Zdeno Chara squeezed a shot through Neuvirth but wide of the post in the final minute of the first period.

Shots in the first period were 10-10.

The first 90 seconds of the second period saw continued turnovers -- one apiece -- and an eventual Flyers penalty (Claude Giroux for slashing Pastrnak) after a Travis Konecny turnover on the rush. The Bruins capitalized fast after two failed clears by the Flyers. A Simmonds failed clear was rotated quickly by Czarnik to Krejci (10th goal of the year) and he hammered a shot over Neuvirth, who went down early in the butterfly. Time of the goal was 2:00.

After Voracek was stripped of the puck in the defensive zone, Neuvirth was caught leaning to the short side post but scrambled across to deny Chara on a wraparound try.

Krug made it 3-1 at the 14:00 mark on a 3-on-2 rush as the Flyers forward back-checked lazily and the rush turned very dangerous as Marchand put a tape-to-tape pass to Krug. Neuvirth had no chance of a save once the puck got to him, and Krug stashed it home. Pastrnak deserved to sit.

Couturier was sprung in close on off the rush, beating Chara on a give-and-go and getting the puck in stride. He either missed the net high and wide or Rask got just a piece of it.

The Flyers went to their second power play at 8:11 as Carlo was called for holding Konecny. Philly turned it into a quick goal as they controlled the draw and Streit made a center point slap pass that Schenn re-directed through a Simmonds screen for his 11th power play goal of the season. Giroux got the secondary assist at 8:16.

Seconds after play resumed, Boston received a five-minute power play. Voracek went in on the forecheck against Kevan Miller, spun around as he saw the defender's numbers and ended up catching him high anyway and boarding him. Miller laid on the ice but was able to go off on his own power. At 8:28 Voracek received a major that seemed based solely on the outcome of the play and looked more like a two-minute minor.

With 1:50 left of what had been a strong kill, Bellemare was denied on a shorhanded bid off the rush. Andrew MacDonald then broke up a dangerous play near the Philadelphia net. In the waning seconds of the penalty, the Bruins made it 4-2 as a Bergeron shot deflected off MacDonald's shin pad and over Neuvirth's glove for his ninth goal of the season at 13:03. Bergeron and Krug got the assists on the power play goal.

Neuvirth fired out the glove for a clean save on a Marchand left circle blast. An even 6:00 remained in the second period. The Flyers continued to abandon Neuvirth to fend for himself. At the mark, Chara (third goal of the season) pinched to the right circle, took a perfect cross-ice pass from Pastrnak and lasered a one-time home to make it 5-2. With a secondary assist on the play, Marchand picked up his fourth point of the game.

With 2:49 left, Neuvirth erased a turnover in front of him to keep the deficit at three goals.

At 18:25, Simmonds was tripped up by Pastrnak and the Flyers went on their third power play.
With 48 seconds left, Chara accidentally shot a backhanded clearing attempt over the glass for a delay of game penalty and a 5-on-3 for Philadelphia.

On a broken play, a puck that Voracek tried to put in the high slot bounced instead off John-Michael Liles and went right to Simmonds at the left post for a power play slam dunk at 19:56. The goal was Simmonds' 18th of the season, ending his recent drought.

The Flyers took 1:37 of carryover 5-on-4 time into the third period.

Neuvirth stopped another Marchand shorthanded bid in the opening minute of the third period.
The rest of the penalty went by with the Flyers unable to gain offensive zone possession.

Streit nearly beat a screened Rask with a shot with about 16 minutes left; the first of three scoring chances for the Flyers after a Boston turnover.

With 11:08 left, Marchand triggered an entry into the Flyers' zone. Scrambling, they ended up taking a penalty. Gudas went for tripping. Thirty five seconds later, Pastrnak drew a tripping penalty on a water-skiing Couturier, creating a 5-on-3 for Boston.

Neuvirth made a good save on a Pastrnak one-timer during the 5-on-3. The Flyers killed off both halves of the penalty.

The Flyers pulled Neuvirth for an extra attacker. The Bruins called timeout with 1:20 left before a Flyers offensive left circle faceoff. Marchand completed a five-point game with an empty net goal after stripping Voracek of the puck. He sealed a 6-3 final.

Third period shots were 13-5 in Boston's favor (39-24 Bruins for the game).
