The Rangers won what can only be described as a sleep-inducing contest Sunday. In their final regular season game at Joe Louis area, New York defeated an equally somnambulant Red Wings squad 1-0 in overtime. J.T. Miller notched the only goal of the game while Henrik Lundqvist notched 21 saves to post his second shutout of the season and 61st of his career. New York faces LA at home. I would go with Lundqvist due to the light workload Sunday, back-to-back strong starts and just one more game until five days off for the All-Star Game.

Lundqvist was strong early on in first and carried that fine performance forward. During the period, after stopping Thomas Vanek, Lundqvist quickly moved post to post to stone Nicklas Kronwall following a great pass from Vanek to find the defenseman sneaking in. Later in the frame, he was aided by the right post, as AA got past a sleeping Adam Clendening but ticked iron to keep it scoreless. Detroit lost their best forward in Vanek after he was injured late in the period.

Neither team generated many good chances but Lundqvist was strong when needed. He stoned Anthony Mantha, then in the third, robbed Henrik Zetterberg. Jared Coreau had a relatively easy time. His best save came in the first when he stoned Pavel Buchnevich in front of the net.

In the overtime, Detroit carried the play early on. A brilliant backcheck by Brady Skjei broke up a possible 2-on-1 and his chip up the glass sprung Zuccarello. Miller made a great read immediately going past Dylan Larkin to the open ice. Zucc used a head-and-shoulder fake, then dished it to Miller, just past the reach or a diving Zetterberg and Miller put it in the open net. Larkin and Zetterberg were gassed after they extended shift on the 3-on-3 and New York took advantage.

    Some notes:

    - Not all was positive in the win, as Kevin Hayes was injured on a possible knee-to-knee collision in the second period. He was seen limping wearing a brace on his left leg/knee following the game. More will know Monday but Hayes is all but sure to miss tomorrow's and Wednesday's game. If Matt Puempel isn't ready to return from his concussion, which is fairy likely, look for Marek Hrivik, Nicklas Jensen or Boo Nieves to be called up with Hrivik as the probably choice.

Leave Nash-Zip-Buch and Kreider-Stepan-Zucc together. Move Lindberg up to the third line to play with Miller and Grabner while Pirri centers Vesey and either Hrivik/Jensen. You could move Pirri up or shift Miller to center and move Vesey up, but I would leave Miller on the wing and move Lindberg up.

    - With the helper on the game-winner, Zuccarello ranks second in the #NHL with 24 even-strength assists this season. He only trails Connor McDavid who has 25. In addition, Zuccarello has notched 17 assists/points over the last 14 games. He leads the NHL in assists over this span. While Zucc isn't scoring goals, he sure is finding a way to stay on the scoresheet.

    - The defense was much better. That's not to say there weren't breakdowns, but overall, the structure, including the forwards backchecking, was improved.

    - Dan Girardi had a strong game defensively. For all the hate he gets, he actually has been very solid the past two games. Skjei was good offensively and turned D to O on the game-winner

    - Lundqvist has certainly steadied in last two games, tracking puck better, not as jumpy between the pipes. Looks patient, which is what we usually say when he is on his game.

    - Per the post-game notes, Lundqvist is the 10th goalie to earn at least 20 wins in 12 or more seasons (Roy, Brodeur, Belfour, Esposito, Osgood, Fuhr, Joseph, Luongo, Vachon).

    - The victory was the Rangers' league-leading 17th on the road. Now if they could just get going at home.

    - Per the post-game notes, the Rangers have allowed two goals or fewer in regulation in 28 games this season and have posted a 24-3-1 record in those 28 contests. While the D needs to be called out, allowing 2 or fewer goals in 28 of 47 games is pretty darn good.
