Tens of thousands of computers in nearly 100 countries have been hit by a global electronic attack using e-mail tools that the US National Security Agency has developed, disrupting Britain's health sector and FedEx.
The hackers tricked their victims to open malicious programs in attachments with malicious e-mails that appeared to contain bills, job offers, security warnings, and other legal files.
Ransomware, or "ransom", hacked computer data and demanded $ 300 to $ 600 for the devices to function normally. Security researchers said they noticed some of the victims had been paid with the digital currency, although they did not know how much they were given to infiltrators.
Researchers at the Avast security software company said they had detected 57,000 cases in 99 countries and Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan were the hardest hit.
Some high schools and universities were affected without specifying their names or names, Xinhua news agency reported.
The most devastating attacks were in Britain, where hospitals and clinics were forced to dispose of patients after they lost access to computers.
FedEx said some of its Windows operating systems were also affected. "We are taking steps to remedy the problem as soon as possible," she said in a statement.
    From Argentina to Spain
"A small number of organizations in the United States have been affected by the cyber attack," said Vikram Takur, research director at Symantec Electronic Security, as hackers apparently launched their campaign by targeting organizations in Europe.
He added that hackers, when they turned their attention to the United States, were the malicious email filters that identified the new threat.
Malicious software fell significantly after a security researcher accidentally bought a domain linked to the malicious program, weakening its effectiveness.
Takor said on Saturday that reviving the scale seemed to weaken the spread of the malicious program.
"The number is very low and falling rapidly," he warned, but warned that any change in the basic code could lead to widespread spread of the malicious program again.
The US Department of Homeland Security said late on Friday that it was aware of the reports of the cyber attack and was sharing information with its local and overseas partners and was ready to provide technical support.
Spanish telecom operator Telefonica was among several targets in Spain but the attack was confined to some computers on an internal network and did not affect customers or services. Telecom Italia Telecom and Telefonica said they were also affected.
Private security companies said Ransomware was a new form of the Wannakray program, which is capable of deploying automatically across large networks by exploiting a known vulnerability in Microsoft's Windows operating system.
No one has claimed responsibility for the malicious program. Investigators at a number of Internet security companies said the hackers were likely to have turned Ransomower into a malicious program that quickly spreads itself by exploiting part of a US National Security Agency code known as the International Blue, a group known as Shadow Brokers revealed last month.
"This is one of the biggest attacks (malicious ransom) on the Web," said Rich Barger, director of anti-threat research at Splink Inc., one of the companies that linked the malicious US National Security Agency (Wanakray) program.
The Shadow Brokers group revealed the "Eternal Blue" as part of an electronic infiltration device that it said was affiliated to the CIA.
Microsoft said it was automatically updating Windows to protect its customers from Wanakray and released another set of updates on March 14 to protect them from Internet Blue.
"Today our engineers are adding detection and protection measures to prevent the new malicious program known as Ransom: Win32 and Krypt," it said in a statement on Friday. She worked with clients to provide additional help.
    * Sensitive timing
The spread of the "ransom" program comes at the end of a week of electronic chaos in Europe, which began last week when the hackers published documents from the campaign of French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macaron before the start of the second round of elections won by Macron.
On Wednesday, hackers disrupted the positions of several French media firms and Airbus, the giant e-mail attack, four weeks before the British general election.
The British authorities prepared for cyber attacks before the elections, as happened with the American elections last year and on the eve of the French elections.
The attacks were blamed on Russia, which has repeatedly denied involvement.
The Russian interior and emergency ministries and Russia's largest bank, Spirbank, were also attacked on Monday.
About 1,000 computers were damaged but managed to contain the virus, the Russian Interior Ministry said on its Web site. The emergency ministry told Russian news agencies it had repulsed the attack, while Cyberbank said the bank's electronic security systems had prevented the virus from entering its systems.
