The Alotro Lado legal services group filed a lawsuit against the US government on Wednesday because border guards illegally "blocked" a group of asylum seekers fleeing gang violence and drug traffickers in Honduras and Mexico from crossing the US-Mexico border.
According to the suit, some members of the US Customs and Border Protection Administration (CBP) referred to President Trump's strict immigration policies when they prevented asylum seekers from entering the United States.
The lawsuit said human rights groups had documented "hundreds" of similar cases dating back to the summer of 2016 at least, before Trump won the November presidential election.
The suit was set up by a non-profit legal group called Calotro Lado, with six people not identified before the US District Court in central California.
The suit claimed that border guards had resorted to "misrepresentation, threats and intimidation" when reporting that asylum seekers could not enter through the various border crossings in California, Arizona and Texas.
