US House Speaker: Trump's remarks about Virginia "morally ambiguous"

US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan criticized US President Donald Trump's remarks about racial violence in Virginia two weeks ago as "morally ambiguous."

This came during a talk to Ryan on Monday evening with the "CNN" America in front of a crowd of about 300 people, in his constituency southeast of Wisconsin.

"I think Trump's comment on the incident was confusing," Ryan said. "It seemed elusive or at least morally ambiguous at a time that required full moral clarity."

On Aug. 12, a 32-year-old woman was killed and 19 others injured when a man ran into a group car protesting the march of white nationalists and neo-nationalists in Charlottesville, while 15 others were injured in skirmishes between the two sides.

Trump criticized the violence, saying the blame was "on both sides," without a clear condemnation of racism, provoking angry reactions in the country.

Ryan expressed support for Trump's recent comments on Afghanistan, saying he did not want the terrorists to take over Afghanistan.

"We will not allow a new safe harbor for terrorists," he said. "We have received good lessons in Syria and in Mosul."

Ryan expressed his belief that Trump's announcement Monday about Afghanistan was "a new doctrine," describing it as "primal realism."
