MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia unveiled the world's first floating nuclear power plant on Saturday at a ceremony in the northern port city of Murmansk, where nuclear reactors will be supplied before heading to Siberia.
The Academy of Lomonosov, built in St. Petersburg, reached Murmansk on Thursday, where it docked at the city's port and was presented to the media on Saturday.
The 144-meter-long, 21,000-tonne ship, built by Russia's state nuclear power company Rosatom, contains two 35-megawatt nuclear reactors, similar to those used to supply icebreakers, AFP reported.
In the summer of 2019, the vessel will fly to the port of Bvek in the Chokotka region in the far northeast of the Russian Federation.
The ship can generate enough energy to consume a city of 200,000, much more than the 5,000 people living in Bivik.
The station will be used mainly to supply oil platforms as Russia expands northward to the North Pole to explore for oil and gas, making the need for electricity necessary in these remote areas.
"Such units can feed remote areas with electricity and heating, and also support sustainable economic development," said Vitaly Trutnev, who is responsible for the manufacture and operation of Rosatom's floating nuclear plant.
He said the use of floating reactors could save 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Initially, the station's reactors were to be supplied with nuclear fuel in St. Petersburg, but the task was transferred to Murmansk instead because of public safety concerns raised by countries on the Baltic Sea.[/ltr]
