[ltr]Afghan President Mohammad Ghani announced a unilateral ceasefire with the Taliban during Eid al-Fitr.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan announces a cease-fire from 27 Ramadan (11 June) to the fifth day of Eid al-Fitr (June 19), following the historic decision by Afghan religious scholars," the Afghan president wrote in a twitter comment on his Twitter page on Thursday.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The ceasefire is an opportunity for the Taliban in Afghanistan to analyze the situation and verify that its violent campaign does not win the hearts of believers, but makes them more alienated," he said.[/ltr]
[ltr]"By declaring a ceasefire, we show the strength of the Afghan government and the will of the people to reach a peaceful solution to the Afghan conflict," said Mohamed Ghani.[/ltr]
