North Korea criticizes America for tougher sanctions

2018/08/09 22:06

(Encyclopedia of this Day News | Iraq News ) - North Korea accused the United States on Thursday of seeking to impose international sanctions , despite signs of goodwill on its part , warning may stop progress in nuclear disarmament if Washington continued to " the same old behaviors."

Pyongyang still wants to implement a general agreement reached at a historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June, a North Korean foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement broadcast by the Korean Central News Agency.

The two sides have pledged to work for North Korea's nuclear disarmament, but have since struggled to reach a deal to achieve this goal as the United States insists on continued sanctions.

The statement came after comments by senior US diplomats this week stressing the need for Pyongyang to take further steps towards denuclearization.

The comments came after a row between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his North Korean counterpart Ry Yong-ho on the sidelines of a regional forum in Singapore last week.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry said Thursday that Pyongyang had halted missile and nuclear tests, followed by "the dismantling of a nuclear test site, yet the United States remains determined to nuclear disarmament first."

North Korea has nevertheless recovered the remains of US soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War, the ministry said.

She said the United States "responded by inciting international sanctions and pressure on North Korea," noting that Washington is seeking to fabricate an excuse to tighten sanctions on the country.

White House or State Department officials were not available for comment.

North Korea has accused high-ranking US officials of "acting against President Trump's will" by "baseless allegations against us and desperate attempts to increase international pressure and sanctions."

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nicky Healy said on Wednesday that the United States "does not want to wait too long" until North Korea takes steps on the road to nuclear disarmament.

"The ball is in the court of North Korea," she told reporters accompanying her on a visit to Colombia.

US national security adviser John Bolton said North Korea had not taken the necessary steps to disarm nuclear weapons.

North Korea's foreign minister visited Iran this week, where Iranian President Hassan Rowhani told him the United States was not credible after Trump pulled out of a nuclear deal with Iran in 2015.
