The World Bank warned on Tuesday that the deterioration of the economic situation in Palestine has become worrisome, pointing out that the economy in the Gaza Strip has entered a phase of collapse.
The World Bank said in a report today that the basic services provided to the population are at risk in light of the lack of liquidity.
The World Bank is due to present its report to the meeting of the Humanitarian Aid Committee for the Palestinian People scheduled for Wednesday in New York, highlighting the serious challenges facing the Palestinian economy and identifying needs in the coming period.
"The economic situation in the Gaza Strip is collapsing under a ten-year siege and recent liquidity shortages, so that aid flows are no longer enough to spur growth," the World Bank said.
"All this has resulted in a worrying situation, with one in two people suffering from poverty, and the unemployment rate among the population of the Gaza Strip, which is dominated by young people, is more than 70%."
The report pointed out that the economy in Gaza "is in a state of collapse, with a growth rate of minus 6% in the first quarter of 2018, and indicators predict further deterioration since then."
He added that although the 10-year siege is the main problem, a number of factors have recently affected the situation in Gaza, including the gradual reduction of the US $ 50 million to $ 60 million annual aid program and reductions in UNRWA programs And the operation of Palestinian refugees. While the situation in the West Bank is not so bad at present, past consumption-led growth is declining and economic activity is expected to slow sharply in the coming period. Finished

And the deterioration of public services such as health care, water and sanitation, it is a situation that requires urgent, real and sustainable solutions. "
