The largest NATO military exercise since the end of the Cold War began in Norway yesterday with a display of strength that angers Russia and reminds it of the solidarity of NATO member states, despite suspicions voiced by US President Donald Trump.
Trident Junction, whose name means "Triple spear from the Baltic Sea" to Iceland, runs through November 7. It includes forces from 31 countries, including some 50,000 troops, 10,000 vehicles, 65 battleships and 250 aircraft, and is aimed at training NATO forces to defend a member state under attack.
Despite concerns about Trump's commitment to the alliance, particularly with regard to the "fifth item" of joint defense, the US military is engaged in the exercises with the largest contingent of 14,000 troops, in addition to the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman.

Besides the Atlantic States (29), Sweden and Finland joined the exercise, and two Russian and two Belarusian military observers were invited as observers.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said: "In recent years, the security environment in Europe has fallen noticeably. The maneuvers send a clear message to our countries and to any potential enemy that NATO is not seeking any confrontation, but we are ready to defend all our allies against any threat. " "We are training in Norway, but the lessons from Trident Janecher are appropriate for other countries, of course."
The exercises indicate that the alliance wants to strengthen its defenses, after years of reducing military expenditures and combat missions in remote areas. Norway, which has been increasingly concerned about Russia since the last Crimean annexation in 2014, has sought to double the number of US marines trained every year in a move criticized by Moscow.
On the other hand, the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shweigo, "Atlantic military activities near our border reached the highest level since the Cold War," noting that the military exercises "simulated military action offensive." He pointed out that the fleet of the north, which is the mainstay of the Russian navy, will be equipped with 5 additional warships, 5 support vessels, 15 aircraft and helicopter, by the end of this year.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that "the main NATO countries are seeking to strengthen their military presence in the region, near the Russian border." "Such irresponsible actions will inevitably destabilize the political and military situation in the north and increase tension," she said, pledging to "take necessary measures to respond." The Russian Embassy in Oslo said it considered the exercises to be "against Russia". "Such activity remains provocative, despite attempts to justify it as purely defensive in nature," she said.
Moscow has expressed its displeasure at the West's reinforcement of its military presence in the region after the United States and Britain intensified their deployment in Norway, with the aim of adapting their forces to cold weather conditions. President Donald Trump has also hinted at resuming the arms race, two days after he announced his intention to withdraw his country from the mid-range nuclear weapons treaty with Russia in 1987.
