US deadline for Iraq on Iranian energy

Iraq currently buys about 1,300 megawatts of electricity from Iran, as well as 14 million cubic meters of gas per year to operate its plants.
According to the US embassy in Baghdad, the United States has granted Iraq a temporary exemption from sanctions, which will continue to purchase natural gas and electricity from Iran.
The embassy said on Twitter that the exemption would give time for Iraq to begin taking steps towards independence in the energy field.
But an informed source told Agence France-Presse that Iraq told the American side that it may take more than four years to reach energy self-sufficiency or find alternatives to Iran in this area.
"It seems that Iraq's special exemption came under its own condition that determines how it will stop using Iranian electricity," said Nusseibeh Younis, a senior adviser at the European Institute for Peace.
"In order to obtain this exception, the Iraqis have presented a kind of road map," she said.
One of the ways in which Iraq could solve its crisis is to invest gas that burns during oil extraction, which according to the World Bank represents an annual loss of about $ 2.5 billion, enough to bridge the gap in gas generation in Iraq

Iraq currently buys about 1,300 megawatts of electricity from Iran, as well as 14 million cubic meters of gas a year to operate its plants.
And if Baghdad wants to avoid the consequences of violating US sanctions on Iran, it must stop buying within a maximum of 45 days and find alternatives to allow it to bridge the energy deficit in Iraq for years.
According to the US embassy in Baghdad, the United States has granted Iraq a temporary exemption from sanctions, which will continue to purchase natural gas and electricity from Iran.
The embassy said on Twitter that the exemption would give time for Iraq to begin taking steps towards independence in the energy field.
