Trump Accused Of Bypassing Power After Dismissal Of Justice Minister
US President Donald Trump on Thursday accused the government of infringing on the independence of the judiciary, freedom of the press, "overstepping power" and "threatening democracy."
Many of the Democratic parliamentarians shocked by Justice Minister Jeff Sessions' resignation after the mid-term elections said the United States was "on the brink of a constitutional crisis."
With a majority of seats in the House of Representatives, some Democrats threatened to hold a parliamentary inquiry as soon as they took office in January 2019.
Justice Minister Jeff Sessions, 71, has resigned "at the request" of Trump, who used to publicly criticize this old ally, who became undesirable after refusing to intervene in the Russian probe.
Trump took it as "very weak" and was unable to protect him in this investigation into the Russian intervention in the 2016 US presidential election, partly related to suspicions of complicity between Russia and the Trump campaign team.
The president, whose former associates have been indicted on this case, has denounced a campaign against him as "unfair" and costly and has consistently expressed his desire to end the investigation of Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller.
Jeff Sessions was temporarily replaced by his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, who published an article in the press criticizing the size of the Russian investigation.

Democrats have denounced the "power overrun" and some Republicans have expressed concern that this would mean the end of Mueller's independence. "It is the government's duty not to disrupt this investigation," Sen. Susan Collins said.
The Progressive Society condemned the "Donald Trump as a close associate of him to oversee the Russian investigation and bypass the red line aimed at protecting this investigation." The group called on Americans to demonstrate on Thursday at 17:00 across the country against the "threat of democracy".
The former president of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), John Brennan, a critic of Trump, said the United States could face "a constitutional crisis very soon."
Some commentators have compared the dismissal of the minister to that of President Richard Nixon in 1973 to his justice minister by dismissing the special prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal.
The minister and his deputy were in favor of resigning to obey the president's order, but Nixon reached his goal of "Saturday's massacre."
Jackie Taber, a senior journalist with CNN, said the forced departure of Jeff Sessions was "a slow and months-long massacre".

Unacceptable

CNN strongly criticizes Trump, whom he often calls "a false news medium."
On Wednesday evening, the White House canceled one of its journalists after an argument with Donald Trump during a press conference.
CNN journalist Jim Acosta, who was engaged in a violent tirade with Trump, refused to return the microphone to the White House employee and was contacted during the argument.
"We will never accept a journalist putting his hand on a young woman," said Sarah Sanders, justifying his cancellation.
The channel expressed its support for the reporter and denounced the "unprecedented decision" which constitutes a "threat to democracy".
The incident took a new twist on Thursday when the White House accused the White House of publishing a video that had been manipulated through Twitter, in which the journalist appeared to be behaving aggressively towards the young woman.
"We are adhering to our statement," Sanders said when asked. The question is: Did the journalist (young woman) touch or not? The video is clear. He did it. "
The Presidential Press Association called on the White House to abolish this "disproportionate" and "unacceptable" punishment.
In June, Pro-Trump proposed to withdraw Jim Acosta's accreditation after embarrassing questions to the President. "The despots are the ones who withdraw the funds of the journalists, not the Democrats."
