Iran demands amendments to US sanctions over natural disasters

The head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, Hishmatullah, called on the international community to raise the issue of amendments to US sanctions with the US government to rebuild the quake-hit areas.
"The Iranian provinces, which have been hit by the earthquake for years, face many problems for their reconstruction," Beshah said. "These problems make it imperative for the international community, human rights circles and fair politicians in the United States to amend sanctions against Iran."
"As a result of the increase in natural disasters in Iran during the last year under the intensification of sanctions, the reconstruction of the earthquake zones requires the amendment of the Iranian oil sanctions, imposed by the US government in November."
He pointed out that "the earthquake that hit the province of Kermanshah in the west of the country last year led to the damage of 10 thousand housing units have not been restored yet."
"His country expects human rights groups to put pressure on the United States to grant exemptions for the sale of oil in order to rebuild the affected and separatist areas," he said.
The United States re-imposed severe sanctions against Iran targeting various sectors, notably oil and energy, while Washington on November 2 exempted eight countries from the oil embargo imposed on Iran, which came into force on 4 of it.
The US Treasury confirmed that "the exemptions for eight countries will be / temporary / and aims to keep oil prices stable, explaining that the US administration is going to stop the Iranian oil exports in full, until Tehran changes its behavior."
An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted Iran's western province of Kermanshah late on Sunday, injuring 716 people.
The earthquake affected Iraq, the border with Kermanshah.
According to the head of the relief and rescue organization, the quake struck the areas recently recovered from last year's devastating earthquake - a magnitude 7.3 earthquake in the city of Serbil, which was said to be the bloodiest of 2017, killing 400 people and 7,100 injured.
