US special envoy to the Syrian issue James Jeffrey , announced that the United States is seeking to end the military presence of Iran in Syria , not its political influence in this country.

He said in a speech to Washington before the Atlantic Council, (a US research institution specializing in international affairs), "We believe that Iran withdraw from there," noting that "when we say Iran , we mean the Iranian ground forces."

"Iran will have diplomatic influence in Syria, an influence that has not been broken for decades, and will now increase as a result of a change in the relative balance of power between the two countries," he said. Regime (Syrian President Bashar) Assad and Iran. "

But Jeffrey stressed that "Iranian forces, especially their means of showing force such as missiles and anti-air defenses, are now a threat to Israel. That is why Israel is targeting them and is likely to pose a threat to us and to our allies and partners, such as Jordan and Turkey."

US President Donald Rumsfeld's administration insists that Iran withdraw its "troops" from Syria, while Tehran insists its military advisers are serving in Syria at the invitation of its legitimate government.
