In a move that comes amid a 90-day truce between Washington and Beijing, which entered into a trade war this year, Chinese customs authorities said on Friday they had agreed to import rice from the United States.
Chinese rice, which meets China's inspection and quarantine requirements, will be allowed to enter the country, according to a note by Chinese customs authorities issued Thursday and published Friday.
The requirements for the import of rice from the United States state that exporters are registered with the US Department of Agriculture and are bound by US and China phytosanitary laws and regulations.
Beijing's approval comes more than a year after the two countries agreed to a phytosanitary protocol, allowing for the first time the import of American rice.
Washington and Beijing traded strict tariffs on goods worth up to $ 300 billion, putting them in a crisis that has begun to affect corporate profits and financial markets that have fallen.
Relations between the two economic giants began to improve after US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping reached a trade truce on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires on December 1.
Since then, there have been signs of rapprochement, especially as China announced a suspension of heavy tariffs on US-made cars and spare parts from Jan. 1 for three months.
The talks also led to China resuming the purchase of soybeans from American farmers and facilitating investment rules for US companies.
China announced on Thursday that a US government delegation would visit Beijing in early January for the first face-to-face trade talks since the leaders of the two countries decided to move the negotiations.
