The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has unveiled efforts to convert the ration card in Iraq to the digital system.

The government will be allowed to identify and remove duplicate records as well as identity verification using biometric technology when distributing food. The new system will replace the paper-based system for collecting, recording and archiving data.

WFP's Country Director and WFP Representative Sally Heidock said Friday that the ration card system is the largest social safety net in Iraq, providing food benefits to nearly all of Iraq's population and serving about 39 million people.

She explained that WFP provides technical support to the government, which intends to use identification technology and develop a digital database that includes citizen data in order to reduce transaction time and provide better service to citizens.

She pointed out that this initiative ensures the optimal use of government resources, and ensures that every target citizen to receive dues efficiently and effectively.
