Iran has begun the process of importing Iranian oil after a suspension due to US sanctions, the central bank governor said on Monday.
The resumption of Iranian oil imports comes after Tokyo was given an exemption from US sanctions that came into effect in November. Iran is the fourth-largest oil producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
"After China, South Korea, India and Turkey, Japan has also begun the process of importing Iranian oil," the Central Bank governor Abdul Nasser Hamati was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.
Iran's oil exports have fallen sharply since US President Donald Trump announced in May 2018 that the United States would withdraw from an agreement that would restrict Iran's nuclear program and would impose sanctions on Tehran.
However, exemptions have been granted to Iran's largest oil buyers - Japan, China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Italy, Greece and Turkey - and allow them to import some oil for another 180 days.
Iran's oil accounted for 5.3 percent of Japan's total crude imports in 2018.
