Indian Workers' Association (PAS) chairman Bassant Reddy confirmed on Thursday that dozens of Indian workers were being held in Iraq and some were serving sentences ranging from 15 to 20 years.
"Many of these workers were unable to return to India because they could not afford to pay the visa, and some of them had traveled from the 1980s," the newspaper "Dhaka Chronicle" quoted Hindi as saying.
"The Indian government needs to improve people's skills and create jobs to keep them from thinking about emigrating outside the country," he said.
"The Iraqi government has imposed a fine of 28 thousand dollars on this group of workers and after negotiations with them, the Iraqi government reduced the amount to 8000 dollars, the government of the state of Tigana was able to pay the amount to be returned to the country."
"There are about 10,000 Indian agents sending workers to the Gulf States, only 28 agents with official authorization to do so, and the Indian government and state government should raise awareness about those fraudsters," he said. Ending / 25 z
