The first Iranian president, Abulhasan Bani Sadr, said that Khomeini had abandoned the principles of the Islamic revolution in 1979 and disappointed many who arrived in the country 40 years ago.

"When we were in France, we adopted everything we said to him, followed by Quranic verses with no hesitation," Beni Sader told Reuters in an interview at his home in Versailles, on the outskirts of Paris.

"We were confident that the religious leader would do this and that all these principles would be realized for the first time in our history," he said. "France was the forum for ideas and information, and he chose this after Kuwait refused to accept him."

"When Khomeini was in France, he was on the side of freedom and feared that his movement would not achieve the results and that he would have to stay there," he said, adding that Western observers saw him as a supporter of the "modern version" of Islam and separation of religion and state.

He added that Khomeini had changed "when he got off the plane ladder in Iran," adding that "the mullahs kissed him and gave him a different fate, which is the dictatorship we see today."

Bani Sadr said he visited Khomeini in Qom after he became the Supreme Leader and recalled his promises made in Paris on women's rights and the wearing of headscarves.

According to Beni Sadr, Khomeini replied that in France he would say what was comfortable at that moment, that he was not committed to everything he said, and was prepared to say something contrary if necessary.

Abulhasan Bani Sadr (85 years old) was one of Khomeini's closest aides in exile in France. Beni Sadr returned to Iran with Khomeini in February 1979. In February 1980 he became Iran's first elected president after the fall of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and was ousted in June 1981.

Beni Sadr considered his exclusion as a coup against democracy in Iran and left the country for France, where he was one of the founders of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (IRNA) for Iranian dissidents in exile.
