The Russian newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" in its Sunday edition quoted an unnamed western intelligence source as saying that Russia has more SS-8-style cruise missiles than previously thought.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) says the missile system violates the US-Russia Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1987, and both sides announced last week their withdrawal from the treaty.

The United States has consistently accused Russia of violating the Convention.

In addition to a training battalion at the missile test development site in Kapustin Yar, southern Russia, and another in Kamishlov, east of Yekaterinburg, Russia has two other sites with battalions and rockets: one in Mozdok in North Ossetia and the other in Shoya near Moscow.

The newspaper said that each of the four battalions have four launchers on wheels each carrying four missiles. This means that Russia has at least 64 SS-8s, which can be armed either by conventional or nuclear warheads.

The missile has a range of 2,350 kilometers.

The missile was carrying a conventional warhead weighing 500 kilograms, with a range of about 2,000 kilometers, the newspaper said.
