NEW YORK (Reuters) - A secret group set up by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been set up to silence dissidents through murder, kidnapping, torture and harassment of women, the New York Times reported on Monday.
The newspaper said that the "Rapid Intervention Group" was set up a year before the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was assassinated by the same team in Istanbul, according to US officials who have seen intelligence reports.
As of 2017, this group carried out at least 12 operations, which means that the killing of Khashoggi and the dismemberment of his body was part of a broad campaign targeting opponents, according to the same source.
According to intelligence information based on the newspaper's report, the team members carried out many missions last year, to the extent that they asked for a financial reward for Eid al-Fitr.
They were charged with forcibly returning Saudis from Arab countries, arresting and assaulting prisoners in palaces belonging to King Salman and his son. One of the victims was a university lecture on the status of women and tortured last year, prompting her to commit suicide.
The newspaper confirmed that bin Salman "was the one who decided to establish this unit, while it was overseen by Saud al-Qahtani, former adviser to the Royal Court, who was dismissed from his post after Khashoggi's death inside the Saudi consulate."
His deputy is intelligence officer Abdul Aziz Mutrab, who accompanied the crown prince on an overseas trip and led the field operations. Among the team members is Thaer Ghaleb Al Harbi.
Al-Qahtani is being held under house arrest, according to the newspaper, which indicated that US officials did not clarify the relationship between the crown prince and the team, but his members viewed Qahtani as a direct channel with Ben Salman.
The newspaper's report dealt with the Ritz-Carlton arrests in 2017, and how Mar-Qahtani and the lobbyist pressed the princes to force them to give up some of their property. They were subjected to physical torture, while one died during detention.
After Khashoggi's death, the group's operations began to unfold, as the singer and the war were consulate during the killing, and Bin Salman personally ordered the execution, according to CIA findings.
According to the report, the Ritz operation in 2017 covered a wider campaign of arrests involving dissidents placed in secret places, some of whom were held in royal palaces. The secret group was also harassed by rights activists imprisoned in prisons; among them were Jane al-Hathul, Aziza al-Yusuf and Iman al-Najafan. Ending / 25
