(Reuters) - Iraqi authorities have opened an investigation into university students glorifying the banned Baath Party in Iraq during a graduation ceremony in a recent incident.
The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Qusay al-Suhail, called for the immediate opening of an investigation with the concerned bodies at the Faculty of Law at Diyala University, in which some students exclaimed during a graduation ceremony glorifying the party that ruled Iraq until 2003.

He said Suhail that "repeated incidents of glorification of the tyrant and Baath during concerts held in universities, is very dangerous."

He continued: "Do not exclude the presence of external and internal driven driven to mobilize youth seduced to do such acts contrary to the law and the Constitution."

He pointed out that what happened "at the University of Diyala / Faculty of Law, from the cheers of some students who are seduced by Baathist songs during the graduation ceremony is unacceptable," stressing that "was directed to form a board of inquiry by the ministry with the concerned bodies at the university, to explain the reasons for this neglect "He said.

He stressed that the Minister of Higher Education that he assumes "security in the universities to be more follow-up with such behavior, and that there is a process of supervision and organization by the official bodies of university celebrations, so as not to be exploited by parties hostile to Iraq and its people, seeking to create strife."

In turn, the University of Diyala denounced the behavior of students during the graduation ceremony. "The Diyala University Council and its faculty members, professors, staff and students deplore irresponsible behavior contrary to the directives of the ministry and the university."

She added that the college "formed an investigative committee under an administrative order, as well as an investigation committee was formed immediately by the presidency of the university."

Recently, there have been incidents of glorification of the Baath party and its leader, Saddam Hussein, especially in academic institutions.

The Iraqi parliament passed a law banning the Baath Party, preventing it from returning to power or political life, and preventing any activities that freeze the party and spread its ideas.

The law, passed in 2016, punishes up to life imprisonment for every person who proves his or her contribution to disseminating the ideas of the party or terrorist organizations through the media.
