A US government committee on religious freedom in the world called Friday for action against Saudi Arabia over the execution of 37 people, mostly Shiites.

The US Committee on Religious Freedom in the World, whose members are appointed by the president and all parties but has an advisory role, said the State Department should stop allowing Saudi Arabia to "act freely."

The State Department is classified in an annual report commissioned by Congress, Saudi Arabia in the category of "countries of particular concern" because of violations of religious freedoms, which usually requires the United States to take punitive measures such as economic sanctions.

But successive foreign ministers issued exemptions every year for punishing Saudi Arabia, citing national security interests.

"The execution by the Saudi government of minority Shi'ites on the basis of their religious identity and peaceful accumulation is not only shocking but directly contradicts the government's official rhetoric about seeking further modernization and improving the conditions of religious freedom," Tanzanian President Tanzin Dorji said in a statement.

The State Department's latest report on religious freedom referred to "an approach of societal bias and discrimination" against the Shiite minority and the prohibition of any religious rites other than Islamic sects.

The High Commissioner told the UN Human Rights Council that at least three of those executed were minors when charged.

President Donald Trump promised to maintain close ties with Saudi Arabia, pointing to its large purchases of US arms and its vast oil reserves and hostility to Iran, the US adversary.

The Foreign Ministry said it urged "Saudi Arabia and all governments" to respect religious freedoms.
