The Iranian Houthi militia is extorting prisoners and trading their cases to raise funds
The Iranian Huthi militias did not hesitate to turn thousands of Yemeni prisoners held in various cases into another aspect of extortion, trafficking in their cases and seeking to recruit them into the ranks of the group in exchange for their exemption from public and private rights.
While the prisoner is subject to years of imprisonment for diseases, epidemics and torture, the month of Ramadan comes as a time for the group to deal with prisoners who are insolvent, whether in financial or debt cases or in the public interest.
According to a number of relatives released from prison, they had only one choice: either staying in prison or agreeing to go to the Houthi fighting fronts. "The al-Houthi group is using Ramadan to raise huge sums of money up to hundreds of millions under the pretext of helping insolvent prisoners in every area under its control from traders and good workers, but they are manipulating this file to use it in their interest," says lawyer Asaad al-Khulani.
"The Houthi group does not give rights holders their money, but liberates its people who have precedents of financial looting. On the other hand, the funds donated by the benefactors are taken and confiscated for the war effort. "
According to his confirmation, most of the prisoners held in the jails of the militias are, with the advent of Ramadan, a new door for obtaining funds, with the exception of political prisoners, jurists, journalists and anyone imprisoned by the leaders of the group.
