France welcomes the participation of the American president and a number of European leaders on the 75th anniversary of the Allied forces' landing in Normandy during the Second World War against the forces of Nazi Germany.
The city of Fair-sur-Mer, northwest France, is hosting the ceremony, amid disagreements centered on US President Donald Trump's skepticism about multilateral cooperation, while leaders will try to show that relations between the two sides of the Atlantic continue unabated.
Before the ceremony, Macaron met British Prime Minister Teresa Mae to launch a project to build a British monument in Fair-sur-Mer. He is scheduled to hold closed talks with Trump, followed by a working lunch, while tens of thousands of French and foreigners flocked to the Normandy coast for this year's ceremony.
Trump arrives in France from Britain, where he made a three-day state visit, where he and Queen Elizabeth II and more than a dozen world leaders attended a ceremony in Portsmouth on the anniversary of the fall of the Allies.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who took part in the Portsmouth ceremony, will not attend the Normandy ceremony. President Vladimir Putin did not receive a call for any of the two events, after he was invited in 2004 to mark the 60th anniversary of the fall, signaling the tense relations between the West and Russia.
