International airlines avoid flying over the Strait of Hormuz after dropping a US aircraft

Lufthansa, along with other international companies, has announced it will stop flying over the Straits of Hormuz

international airlines, including British Airways, Emirates, KLM and Lufthansa, announced Friday they would stop flying over the Strait of Hormuz as tensions between the United States and Iran mount in the region after a US plane was shot down.
The decision comes after the Federal Aviation Administration issued a warning to prevent American civil airlines from flying in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
The US Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement that the restrictions were due to "increased military activities and increased political tensions in the region, posing an unintended danger to US civil aviation operations." The United States and Iran are engaged in a verbal war after Iran was toppled on Thursday.
The US decision applies only to aircraft registered in the United States, and United Airlines said it would suspend its flights between Newark and Bombay to implement the decision.
But European, Asian and Arab companies have also confirmed the suspension of flights over the Straits of Hormuz.
"Our safety and security team is constantly coordinating with the authorities, including the US Federal Aviation Administration, around the world as part of its comprehensive risk assessment of all the routes we fly," said a spokeswoman for British Airways.
Lufthansa also announced that it would stop flights over the Strait of Hormuz.
Dubai-based Emirates Airline has joined the ban by announcing that it will change its flight routes to avoid "potential conflict zones". "Given the current situation, Emirates has taken precautionary measures, especially avoiding overflights of potential conflict zones," the airline said.
Etihad Airways said it was "following the situation closely" and had developed "contingency plans." Flydubai, in turn, said it had "modified some of the existing flight routes as a precautionary measure."
While the company "KLM" Dutch for its part in a statement that "the crash of the plane is a reason for not flying over the Strait of Hormuz now, this is a precautionary measure," and added that safety is "absolute priority" of the company.
Tension between Tehran and Washington has increased after Iran dropped the plane, which it says penetrated its airspace while Washington says it was flying in international airspace after a series of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf, which the United States attributed to Iran.
