Oil prices fell on Monday amid fears of falling demand for crude after US President Donald Trump said it would impose tariffs on more Chinese imports, which could escalate a trade war between the world's two largest economies.
Tension in the Middle East has provided some support for prices, with Iran holding a tanker it says is smuggling oil.
London Brent crude <CLc1> fell 50 cents, or 0.8 percent, to $ 61.39 a barrel by 0029 GMT. US benchmark WTI was no better than its predecessor, dropping 24 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $ 55.42 a barrel.
The benchmark crude fell last week, with Brent falling more than 2 percent and US crude about 1 percent.
"Demand for oil is disappointing ... in 2019 due to weak economic activity, unfavorable weather and trade tension," Goldman Sachs said in a research report.
Trump said last week he would impose a 10 percent fee on $ 300 billion of Chinese imports and said he could raise fees more if Chinese President Xi Jinping failed to move more quickly to reach a trade deal between the two countries.
Trump expands the scope of US tariffs to almost all Chinese imports.

Oil prices fell in early trade on Monday, as fears of a US-China trade war and the prospect of their joint talks faltering.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced the start of a 10 percent surcharge on imported Chinese goods worth $ 300 billion from early September.
This comes after Washington and Beijing held the 12th round of trade talks in Shanghai, China, on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Xinhua.
Brent crude for October delivery fell 1.18 percent, or 73 cents, to $ 61.16 a barrel by 0530 GMT.
US WTI futures fell 1.06 percent, or 59 cents, to $ 55.07 a barrel.
Today's oil prices are the lowest in nearly a month and a half, especially since mid-June.
