    BAGHDAD -
A US court sentenced a former security guard at Blackwater to life in prison after a retrial on charges of murder for his role in a 2007 massacre that killed unarmed civilians in Baghdad.
A federal jury in the Washington District Court convicted security guard Nicholas Slatten in December of a first-degree crime, the second time the court found him guilty of the charge.
Slaten was convicted of killing Ahmed Haitham Ahmed al-Rubaie, 19, who was studying medicine and spent with more than a dozen Iraqi civilians by Blackwater guards in Baghdad's Nisour Square on December 16, 2007.
Blackwater guards opened fire in the square while escorting a diplomatic convoy using Sniper rifles, machine guns and grenades were unprovoked by the case, killing 14 civilians and wounding 18 others. The Iraqi government says the death toll was higher.
The shooting deepened Iraqi discontent with Americans in the country four years after US forces toppled Saddam Hussein and raised questions about Washington's widespread reliance on contracted security.
Slaten challenged the court, which issued the verdict on Wednesday, calling its decision "an abortion of justice that will not last long," according to The New York Times.
This is the third trial for Slaten, whose conviction fell the first time and the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict in the second trial in 2018.
Slatin, one of four Blackwater guards convicted in 2014, and the 30-year prison sentence passed on the rest were also overturned and will be reinstated. Their trial ended
