Lack of services and unemployment set off demonstrations in Basra
Mass protests took place late on Thursday in the streets of Basra province against the deterioration of services and demand for jobs.
The protesters chanted slogans against the provincial government and condemned its inability to provide electricity, safe water and job opportunities for the unemployed.
Security forces imposed tightened measures to coincide with the start of demonstrations.
Basra is the cradle of Iraq's largest oil fields, producing about 80 percent of the country's oil.
Last year, Basra witnessed similar demonstrations that resulted in deaths in protest against the deterioration of services and the escalation of contaminated water poisoning. The percentage of dissolved salts in water is 7500, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, while the World Health Organization pointed out that the rate becomes unacceptable if exceeded 1200.
