US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview with the Washington Examiner newspaper that his country would not allow Iran to continue developing its missile program.
Pompeo added that Washington will continue to do its utmost to ensure that oil shipments do not reach the "hands of terrorists."
On the Grace 1 oil tanker, Pompeo said it was an example of US efforts to prevent oil shipments from reaching terrorists, as well as a host of sanctions that would deprive Iranian leader Ali Khamenei of money used to terrorize the world.
"We have been very effective in that, and we can see the results with Hezbollah," Pompeo said.
The US secretary of state said the sanctions were designed for Iran to join the international community, to stop its assassination campaigns in Europe and to stop terrorist operations carried out by its arms in the region.
The US official expressed the hope that the Iranians will see that "the best they can do for the security and prosperity of the Iranian people is to rein in this regime."
