North Korean leader Kim Jong-un supervised the test of a "multi-barreled giant rocket launcher" on Saturday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Sunday.
The South Korean military said North Korea appeared to have fired two short-range ballistic missiles that landed in the sea off its east coast in the latest in a series of missile launches in recent weeks.
Photos released by official North Korean media showed rockets being fired from huge tubes placed on the back of an 8-wheeled vehicle.
Analysts said it appeared to be at least the fourth new missile system unveiled by North Korea since nuclear disarmament talks stalled at the February summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump.
North Korea should further develop new strategic and tactical weapons "to counter ever-growing military threats and pressure from hostile forces," Kim was quoted as saying by the Central News Agency.
Kim said the young North Korean scientists who developed the missiles "are the country's treasure and precious wealth that cannot be traded for anything."
A comment by KCNA said on Saturday that North Korea "will never trade the country's strategic security by easing sanctions."
