Former US Secretary of Defense James Mattis has resigned from the Trump administration after the latter's decision to withdraw from Syria, stressing that the defeat of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) is not just about extracting geography.
"I thought we should maintain influence in Syria and I explained this in my open letter explaining why I thought I should leave the administration, because I believe in allies, and I think that's our unique strength," Mattis said in an interview with CNN.
Asked whether ISIS had already been defeated and whether he would return, Mattis said: “He (IS) is not the thing to defeat even if we take away the geography he once had. ”
Regarding not resigning earlier about other controversial Trump files, Mattis said: “When we enter the military, we take a oath to preserve the constitution. The defense is saying that we will not defend the state today.
“We defend the constitution and move away from politics, day after day, especially now when the two overlap, we try not to get involved and wonder why the state is fragile now? Because we allowed the troops to distract. ”
