BAGHDAD (Reuters) -
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will play with conservative and security cards in front of inexperienced rivals in an election campaign on Tuesday.
Following are some of Netanyahu's positions on key political issues, as he seeks a fifth term in office:
The Palestinian issue:
With peace talks collapsing in 2014 and no signs of reviving them, Netanyahu has abandoned his earlier stated desire to negotiate a Palestinian state On land occupied by Israel.
Netanyahu gained support from US President Donald Trump, who recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and annexed the Golan Heights.
Israel occupied the Golan Heights during the 1967 Middle East war and declared annexation and later built settlements in measures not recognized by most of the world powers it regards as occupied Syrian territory.
Netanyahu has repeatedly said he intends to declare Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements in a possible prelude to annexing them, and has
also announced plans to annex the Jordan Valley, a vast West Bank if he wins the election. The declaration drew condemnation from leaders of a number of countries and from Palestinians seeking a state that encompasses all the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
In Gaza, Netanyahu led inconclusive military confrontations that did not stop cross-border rocket attacks on Israel. In the election campaign, Netanyahu threatened to step up fighting against Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.
Corruption issues
The Israeli attorney general announced his intention to indict Netanyahu in three long-standing corruption cases after a hearing in October. Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing and called the allegations against him a "pursuit" of his political opponents.
Iran
The biggest threat to Netanyahu's national security is Iran, its nuclear program, and its regional influence. The man formulated the so-called "inter-war campaign" strategy, including cross-border strikes, many of them secret, to thwart the establishment of Iran's presence in Syria, as well as in Lebanon and Iraq, without turning into open conflict.
Economy
The Israeli economy is performing strongly, which Netanyahu attributes to the free-market policies he founded as finance minister.
