Last year, China acquired half of the world's patent applications, according to the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
According to the organization, China has set a record 1.55 million patent applications, mainly in the telecommunications and technology sectors.
China's share of patents in 2018 rose 11.6 percent from its 2017 share, and included
applications received by the Chinese Intellectual Property Office from overseas innovators and foreign companies seeking to protect patents, CNBC reported.
The United States came in second with about 600,000 applications, down 1.6 percent from the previous year and the first decline in a decade.
Globally, innovators filed 3.3 million patent applications, 14.3 million trademark applications, 1.3 million industrial design applications, and Asia accounted for more than two-thirds.
