BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's defense minister has proposed the creation of a security zone in northern Syria to protect displaced civilians and ensure continued fighting by Islamic State militants.
"I suggest that we establish a security zone under international control with the participation of Turkey and Russia," Krump Karenbauer said in an interview with Deutsche Welle television.
The move will contribute to the stability of the area so that civilians can rebuild and refugees can return voluntarily, she said.
Crump Karenbauer said she was in close contact with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the idea of a security zone in northern Syria and had informed Germany's key allies of the proposal.
This is the first time that the German government has proposed a military mission in the Middle East. If the proposal is backed by Turkey and Russia, Berlin is expected to send troops to Syria as part of the mission. is over
