HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong police shot protesters on Monday morning as chaos erupted across the city a day after tear gas was dispersed to disperse gatherings that blocked roads, cable television reported.
Police fired live ammunition at protesters on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island, local media said.
Video footage showed a protester lying in a pool of blood, and police also used pepper spray in video footage, which was posted on the Internet.
Police said in a statement that fanatical demonstrators had set up roadblocks in various locations around the city and called on demonstrators to "stop their illegal actions immediately."
Hong Kong, an autonomous region, has been undergoing five months of protests to denounce Beijing's growing interference in its affairs.
China has warned that it will not allow "any activity" that could divide the country or threaten national security, calling for "strengthening national sentiment" in the city.
Chinese state media have called for a "tougher line" against demonstrators demanding more freedom in Hong Kong, following new demonstrations and violence over the weekend as Beijing tightened its grip on the city.
