WSJ highlights the similarities between the demonstrations of Iraq and Ukraine and reaches a paradox
2019/11/12 02:31:27
Fifteen years after the regime change in Iraq, freedom practices still face challenges, especially under Iranian domination, both within Iraq and even in the region, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
Since last month, protests have erupted in Iraq denouncing corruption and the political class, which have been met with violent repression, prompting Tehran to be accused of efforts to undermine demonstrations or any voices opposed to Iran's interests in Iraq.
The report points out that the popular defeat of Iran in Iraq is of its own making, especially since the claims at the beginning were related to the country and the failures of governments and the regime in providing basic services to citizens, not to mention corruption and nepotism in the political class.
Perhaps the most important two important questions posed by Iraqi youth that how the country is the second largest oil producer in OPEC, but it can not provide electricity to citizens? And how does "the land of the two rivers" do not have enough drinking water?
In response to the demands of the Iraqi street, the leadership in Tehran called on the Iraqi government to address the "riots," as Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei described on October 2, while Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani presided over meetings with Iraqi leaders, and Iranian-backed militias opened fire. The demonstrators killed more than 250 Iraqis and injured thousands.
The paper also notes that Soleimani prevented the Iraqi prime minister from resigning in the wake of the protests.
The Wall Street Journal offers an approach between Iran's approach and its practices in Iraq, and Russia's practices and practices in Ukraine and how it dealt with the protests in 2014. The two regimes see these protests as a threat to them, and greater fear if these demonstrations succeed, this means the possibility of contagion to other countries that Some of them owe allegiance to Iran.
She pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin saw the protests in Ukraine as an external conspiracy, and that it is not the birth of the inside, which is the view that the leaders of Iran that the demonstrations in Iraq "American-Israeli conspiracy."
The demonstrators expressed their anger at Iran's policies towards their country, its interference in the affairs of the country and its support for armed militias working for Tehran inside Iraq, where they accuse them of corruption, intimidation of citizens and control of the country's capabilities.
During the demonstrations, slogans calling for Iran's exit from Iraq were heard. Baghdad witnessed during the demonstrations the chants of "Iran by land, by land, Baghdad remains free."
These protests are unprecedented in modern Iraqi history. Spontaneous due to resentment of the entire political class, began even to the clergy.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry called on citizens not to travel to Iraq and postpone their flights in light of violent protests, especially in southern cities where there are religious shrines.
