Full neighborhoods and areas in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, and a number of southern and central provinces, appeared Sunday, almost empty, after the people responded to the call of the general strike launched by the demonstrators, amid intense security and a state of anticipation prevails in the scene.
The strike comes after calls for activists escalated on Saturday evening, which reacted rapidly through leaflets and statements in the streets and public gatherings, accompanied by calls in a number of mosques through loudspeakers, to express solidarity with the demonstrators demanding the dismissal of the government.
The majority of Iraqi universities and schools in Baghdad, Basra, Maysan, Karbala, Najaf, Dhi Qar, Qadisiyah, and Babylon appeared almost paralyzed with the start of official working hours, amid cuts to roads leading to some service departments in Basra and Dhi Qar, and a strike in some oil installations also in Basra and Maysan.
