Maliki’s bloc says it is willing to consider other candidates for his position

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s days in the top job appeared to be numbered, after his political bloc wrote to the country’s top Shiite religious authority to say it is ready to replace him if necessary.

The letter, delivered to the office of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in the Shiite holy city of Najaf on Saturday night, said Maliki’s State of Law coalition will table another name for the premiership if religious authorities deem it to be in the interests of Iraq, lawmakers said. It came just hours after Maliki’s Dawa party released a statement urging politicians not to “cling” to their posts — indicating that even his party may be turning against him.

Maliki’s coalition won the largest share of the vote in elections in April, but not a majority, making him reliant on political alliances to form a government. But with many blaming him for the turmoil that has convulsed the country since the polls, some parties are digging in their heels to prevent him ruling for a third four-year term.

But even more problematic for Maliki have been hints from Sistani that it is time for him to step aside. The reclusive octogenarian cleric is arguably the most influential figure in Iraq, with his words closely followed by millions across the country. Although he normally avoids directly embroiling himself in politics, his sermons have been increasingly pointed.

The Shiite Dawa party’s statement Saturday [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] delivered on behalf of Sistani a day earlier, which also urged politicians not to cling to their positions and to expedite the formation of a government within the timeline set out by the constitution, which stipulates that a name for the prime minister’s role should be presented in less than two weeks.
