Washington, Jul 29 (Prensa Latina) The United States secretly increased the number of military advisors in Iraq and keeps there 242 of the total of 300 the White House decided to send to assist the local government, The Hill newspaper reported today.

In the past few weeks, the Pentagon has sent 62 members of the Special Operation Forces, elite units, with the mission to assist the Iraqi Army in fighting the Islamic State (ISIL), which occupied several key cities in that nation.

The Barack Obama Administration has not offered any detail on this gradual increase of troops, and the latest update was done on July 1st, when the Pentagon said it had sent 180 soldiers up to that moment, added The Hill.

A preliminary report from the members of the Special Operation Forces about the situation in Iraq was given to the Department of Defense last week and will be included in the recommendations to be made to Obama for an eventual increase of the military assistance to the Government of Baghdad.

The Pentagon has 807 troops deployed in Iraq now, against 650 early this month; 242 of them are advisors, another 100 are part of the staff working at the US Embassy and 465 guarantee the embassy's security and work in other areas.

Meanwhile, Republican legislator Doug Collins questioned last week Obama's legal authority to send the said units because the War Powers Resolution establishes only a 60-day period to keep troops abroad without Congressional authorization and gives an additional month for their total withdrawal.
