On Thursday, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities announced its intention to involve the private sector in road construction projects, while indicating that it is facing a problem in operating the roads after their completion.
The Director General of Roads and Bridges at the Ministry, Hussein Jassim, told the official news agency, "Security and economic stability are essential factors in the recovery of the investment environment," noting that "the road sector is one of the sectors targeted for investment in all countries of the world."
He added, "Investment in Iraq is active in only two sectors, housing and entertainment, so the private sector must be involved in the process of constructing and operating roads."
He pointed out that "the ministry faces a problem in operating the roads after their completion," stressing "the ministry's readiness to cooperate with the private sector in this field, but on the condition that there are real investors."
