Iraq PM Says Key Base Taken Back From Islamic State

  • By sinan salaheddin, associated press

BAGHDAD — Jul 9, 2016, 3:09 PM ET

Iraqi forces recaptured a northern air base from the Islamic State group on Saturday, a victory hailed by the prime minister as a key step ahead of the long-awaited operation to retake the northern city of Mosul.
In a statement issued on his web site, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi described the air base in the town of Qayara as an "important base to liberate Mosul," and called on Mosul residents "to get ready for the liberation of their areas."
Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, fell to IS militants in the summer 2014, when the extremist group captured large swaths of northern and western Iraq. In late March, Iraqi forces launched an operation aimed at dislodging IS from areas to the south and southeast of Mosul and gradually cutting off the city's supply lines.
But retaking Mosul itself is not likely to come anytime soon. It will be an enormous undertaking for Iraqi troops, even though they are backed by airstrikes from the U.S.-led coalition and have been joined by pro-government fighters — mostly Shiite militias.
In the mostly Sunni province of Anbar, west of Baghdad, government troops on Saturday consolidated their grip on the provincial capital of Ramadi, retaken from the IS last year, when they captured two villages just north of the city.
An Associated Press video of the fighting showed government troops rocketing IS positions and black smoke pillowing up in the distance. Troops backed by armored cars were later seen marching inside a date palm grove.
The IS group was pushed out of the Anbar city of Fallujah last month after holding it for more than two years. Despite a string of recent territorial defeats, the militants still hold large pockets of territory in northern and western Iraq.

actually SB, they have been inching towards this base for a long period and it is about time they got there.  As it stated, this is important for them.  As for taking a long time to retake Mosul, well, we will have to see.

Iranian Revolutionary Guard to participate in Mosul Battle, General

9:45 PM  ADMIN

Teheran/ Iraq TradeLink: Iranian Senior Advisor at the Revolutionary Guard General Airij Mesjedi "officially" announced that his country will take part in the expected Mosul battle against Da'ish (ISIS) organization.

In a press statement, General Mesjedi disclosed that Iran will send military consultant to support the Iraqi forces in the expected Mosul battle.

Teheran completely exposed its "direct military intervention in Iraq and Syria", as well as other Arab countries.

It has "no feeling of embarrassment or fear, either from the big powers or regional countries",

particularly Saudi Arabia that completely rejected such Iranian interventions, which were regarded as threats to its national security, as well as for the Gulf states and other Arab countries that suffer sectarian strife.

Media and official reports said Iran has many training camps for Iranian, Pakistani and Afghani volunteers to be sent to war fronts in Syria and Iraq.

Iraq, always, kept silent on such news or statements on the presence of the Iranian forces on its soil or participation under the banner of allied Popular Mobilization Forces.

General Mesjedi justified such intervention that Da'ish organization has the greater forces in Mosul city, but confirmed that this battle will be "decisive" that will "end" Da'ish presence in Iraq.

Mesjedi's statements coincided with American ones that may insinuate that Teheran got the US green light to participate in this battle.

US President Barrack Obama expected, last April, that the completion of Mosul's liberation will end before the end of 2016.

Today, Qayara air base, south of Mosul city, was re-captured by the Iraqi forces from Da'ish control, which lasted since June, 2014.

It is expected that this air base will be the center from coming military operations to free Mosul's city.
In fact, the Iraqi army began Mosul's liberation battle by freeing some nearby villages, south of the city to ensure a safe passage to the entrapped civilians in Mosul.

Analysts believe that post-war era shall be complicated in Nineveh province, where conflicts will escalate among the ethnic components in the city, particularly the Kurds.

On the other side, Teheran is worried about the return of the anti-Iranian Kurdish Labor party in the area, which shall be a prelude for its military activities against Iran itself.

as for the time frame to liberate Mosul, from everything i have read, there appears to be about 2000-4000 ISIS fighters in Mosul, some of which I am sure are locals who are there only for a pay cheque and will drop their weapons like France in World War 1 and 2 as soon as the liberators arrive......here are two articles that i have found that represents some of the forces about to descend on Mosul:

15.000 Iraqi fighters participate in Mosul battle, NS advisor

Baghdad/ Iraq TradeLink: Iraqi National Security (SN) Advisor Falih al-Fayyad announced that 15.000 Mosul Popular Fighters will participate in liberating Nineveh province.

The 15.000 fighters will be within Mosul tribal volunteers, he added.

A committee was formed to determine the volunteers and their sites.

"Mosul volunteers will have a basic role in liberating the province", he confirmed.

Washington expedites Mosul liberation battle, sources

8:05 AM  ADMIN

Baghdad/ Iraq TradeLink: US official sources reported that Washington "hopes" to end the international coalition's campaign against Da'ish (ISIS) organization before the end of 2017 summer.

Earlier US reports, in 2014, said that the destruction of Da'ish organization will need three years, then, after few weeks, to expand the military operations to cover Syria.

US presidential special envoy to the international coalition Bret McGurk expressed, before the US Congress, his desire "to end the campaign faster than planned before".

He pointed that he went to Iraq to discuss the military attack for liberation of Mosul city with the Iraqi government, adding that Da'ish territories are minimizing.

McGurk said that Da'ish organization lost 50% of their occupied lands in Iraq in 18 months and 20% in Syria.

US administration increased its momentum against Da'ish organization in Iraq by sending Special Forces and additional military advisors, which reached to 4000 US members.

notice neither of these articles mention how many Iraqi troops or peshmerga, Canadian, or how many Iranian fighters are going in there.....really.....I am doubting this will last all that long.  it will take longer to find all the bombs that ISIS left in holes then it will take to get rid if ISIS in Mosul
