Erbil: 317 Peshmerga from Syrian Kurdistan [Rojava] received training at Xenes military camp in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Peshmerga underwent two months of training and will join the Roj Brigade, part of the Zeravani Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). They graduated on Thursday. The Syrian National Council which is affiliated with Massoud Barzani and his KDP party attended such a training course for the first time. The Council assumes Rojava Peshmerga as part of its force. The Roj Brigade consists of two units and they are part of the Zeravani Peshmerga. The attendees of the course were chosen among 3,000 applicants from Rojava. Another training course for new recruits will begin soon. |
Canada to provide field hospital for Mosul battle
Canada will provide a field hospital in support of the operation to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State (IS). The commitment was made in meetings of coalition member defence ministers in Washington on Wednesday. “There were gaps that needed to be filled in the coalition and one of them was the medical facility,” Canada’s Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan told CBC News. Canada will provide a Role 2 field hospital to provide emergency care to casualties and aid in medical evacuations, CBC reported. As well, 60 personnel will accompany the medical facility, which Canada committed to operating for at least one year near the frontlines west of Erbil.

Local production shows slow recovery as hundreds of factories reopen in Iraqi Kurdistan
Erbil: According to the ministry of trade and industry in Iraqi Kurdistan nearly 40 percent of the bankrupt businesses have made it back to the market after the new custom regulations effectively stimulated domestic production. The ministry says almost 90 percent of the registered factories declared bankruptcy over the past three years. “Some 3400 works closed completely of the 3800 manufacturing firms that were registered in 2013,” says Abdulrazaq Usman from the ministry. “But now we see a positive trend as nearly half of these businesses have reopened, especially those in the food industry,” he said. Over 75 percent of the domestic consumption in Kurdistan region is based on imported goods with which local production has little chance to compete in terms of price and quality, something the ministry has tried to address. |
