'Hillary's America' No. 2 New York Times Best Seller
Whether or not Hillary Clinton got a “bounce” following the Democrat Convention in Philadelphia, “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party,” the highly critical book and documentary by Dinesh D’Souza that reveals the Democrat nominee’s history and the history of her party, certainly did.
For the first time, “Hillary’s America” made the New York Times Bestseller list, coming in second behind another book exposing Clinton’s past behavior, just two weeks after its release.
The movie, first appearing in theaters on the eve of the Democrat convention, has already become the top-grossing documentary of 2016, and, with a gross of $6.3 million on Thursday, has joined the list of top-10 grossing political documentaries of all time. With its current momentum, “Hillary’s America” is expected to surpass Michael Moore’s “Roger & Me” — gross $6.7 million — this weekend.
Indeed, IndieWire has dubbed D’Souza “the conservative Michael Moore.”
D’Souza, in an interview at the Republican Convention in Cleveland, told WND the movie and the timing of its release was meant to counter the Democrats’ message.
“They’ll put out their narrative, and we’ll put out our counter-narrative,” he said.
The Democrats’ narrative is that racism, particularly from the right and the Republican Party, keeps blacks in poverty.
But D’Souza, in the movie and the companion book of the same name, takes viewers through the history of slavery and the Jim Crow era, arguing that it’s the Democrats who need to own up to a racist past.
The film begins with scenes from the San Diego halfway house where D’Souza was confined nightly in fulfillment of his 2015 sentence for pleading guilty to violations of federal campaign-finance law. Many conservatives claimed the Obama administration was exacting revenge on D’Souza for criticizing the president in his film “2016: Obama’s America.” Gerald R. Molen, producer of D’Souza’s two previous films, told WND in January 2015 the charges were “the equivalent of prosecuting a political dissident in the Soviet Union for jaywalking.”
