Erbil: A Kurdish Peshmerga official dismissed claims made by an Arab media outlet that Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) granted permission to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to open a military training center in Sulaimani to train Shiite militia in preparation for the imminent Mosul offensive against the Islamic State (IS). “No Iranian military base is present neither in Sulaimani province nor in any other areas of the Kurdistan Region,” Jabar Yawar, chief of staff of the Peshmerga ministry, told Rudaw on Sunday. Yawar stressed that “such claims and information published are made up and lies.”
Barzani reaffirms participation of Peshmerga in Mosul operations
Erbil: Masoud Barzani said Peshmerga will take part in operations to liberate the city of Mosul in a statement released on Sunday reiterating the participation of Kurdish forces in the upcoming offensive. The Kurdistan Region’s Presidency (KRP) announced in a statement that Barzani received Arab tribal leaders in Erbil from the Anbar Governorate to discuss the battle against the Islamic State (IS) and the issue of internally displaced people in Iraq. Barzani said during the meeting that Peshmerga forces will participate in Mosul operations but will remain outside of the city, according to the KRP statement. “As the liberation of Mosul without the Peshmerga is impossible, the Peshmerga will participate in the operations but will not enter the city, taking a supportive role,” the statement said, citing Barzani.
