    QAMISHLO, Syrian Kurdistan,— US volunteer with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) William Savage, known by his Kurdish comrades as Amed Kobane, was killed during the operation to liberate the Syrian city of Manbij from the Islamic State (IS) group, the YPG said in a statement on Wednesday.
    Savage was severely injured by IS bombardment and died from his injuries on August 10, the statement said. The YPG noted that he had been helping civilians to escape from Manbij.
    Originally from the US state of Maryland, Savage joined the Kurdish fighters in 2015 and had participated in a number of anti-IS operations.

    Savage is the fourth US citizen to be killed while fighting alongside Kurdish forces in Syrian Kurdistan. On July 21, the YPG announced that Nevada-born volunteer [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] was killed in the Manbij operation.
    On August 11, the YPG said [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], a 22-year-old Colorado native man, known by his Kurdish comrades as Ciwan Firat and was killed in “heroic” combat against IS militants.
    Earlier this month a British man and a Slovenian national fighting alongside the Syrian Kurds were[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] during battles against the Islamic State in the city of Manbij.

    The Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) recaptured Manbij on August 13 after a 73-day campaign against Daesh, which is outlawed in the United States, Russia and many other nations.
