Shiite militia leader advises Kurdish Peshmerga to ‘protect own borders’, stay out of Mosul
Baghdad: An Iraqi Shiite militia official issued a strong warning to the Kurdish Peshmerga on Saturday, saying that the Peshmerga should retreat from all areas they have liberated from Islamic State (IS) in Nineveh Province and that they “do not need the Peshmerga” to support Iraqi armed forces in the looming battle for Mosul. “We are going to take part in the battle for Mosul and we do not need Kurds or the Peshmerga to assist our forces,” Karim Nuri, spokesperson for the Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi militias, told Rudaw TV, warning that they “advise the Peshmerga to protect the Kurdistan Region borders and do not distract themselves with entering Mosul. If they do, they will definitely play with fire.” Nuri said that they in no way will allow “the annexation of Mosul areas including Shingal, Makhmour, and Bashiqa into the Kurdistan Region.” “We are calling our Kurdish brothers and the Peshmerga to protect their region’s border. We could liberate the city without them and even do not need them. All they have to do is protect their own borders.”
Turkish jets hit alleged PKK targets in Iraqi Kurdistan
Erbil: Turkish warplanes bomb alleged targets of Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK carried in Iraqi Kurdistan, the Turkish military announced Saturday, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. The Turkish General Staff said in a statement that 29 PKK Kurdish PKK rebels were “neutralized” in a security operation in Iraqi Kurdistan’s Gara region on Aug. 29. Turkish jets have been carrying out airstrikes against PKK positions across the border in Iraqi Kurdistan, since Ankara ended a two-year ceasefire agreement in July 2015.

Negotiations aim to resolve attempt to unseat Iraqi finance minister over corruption
Baghdad: The influential head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Ammar al-Hakim, is leading negotiations between Shiite and Sunni factions in an effort to end attempts to oust Finance Minister Hoshyar Zebari from his post over corruption allegations. “Hakim began his attempts by talking to the Shiite National coalition in the parliament,” Mohammed Maasudi, an MP from the Shiite Citizen faction in the Iraqi parliament, told Rudaw. “Some elements within the coalition responded positively to Hakim’s call and meetings with others are still ongoing.” Maasudi believes that the issue will be “decided after the Eid holidays.” |
