The National Rifle Association just released a new ad targeting women worried Hillary Clinton will take away their gun rights, leaving them “with nothing but a phone” for protection.
The 30-second ad, called “Nightstand,” begins with a woman alone in bed when she hears a window break in her home. Awakened by the shattering glass, the woman lunges out of her bed, rushes to her phone to call 911 and immediately opens her gun safe.

Before the frightened woman can remove her firearm from the safe, the container fades away.
“Hillary Clinton would take away her right to self defense, and with Supreme Court justices, Hillary can,” the ad’s narrator says, after noting the average 911 response time is 11 minutes. “Don’t let Hillary leave you protected with nothing but a phone.”
The pro-gun rights group is spending $5 million on the ad, which will air on TV stations in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nevada, Virginia and Ohio. Though the video does not mention Donald Trump by name, it does correspond with the narrative his campaign is pushing about the Democratic presidential nominee.
To date, the NRA has spent more than $11 million to support the Republican presidential nominee.
According to a report from The Trace, a nonprofit outlet that reports on gun issues in the U.S., a recent study by Harvard and Northeastern University researchers reveals the primary reason for gun ownership in the United States is self defense.
Though Clinton has advocated for stricter gun laws, most notably expanded universal background checks, she has not indicated she supports a unilateral ban on firearms or a retraction of the Second Amendment. However, in leaked audio from 2015, Clinton told a group of donors the Supreme Court “is wrong on the Second Amendment,” presumably referring to the landmark 2008 ruling that found the handgun ban in Washington, D.C., to be unconstitutional.
“I’m going to speak out, I’m going to do everything I can to rally people against this pernicious, corrupting influence of the NRA and we’re going to do whatever we can,” she said at the time.
Speaking on the issue of gun rights during a rally in Miami, Florida, last week, Trump suggested Clinton’s Secret Service detail should disarm because “she doesn’t want guns.”
“She wants to destroy your Second Amendment,” he said. “I think what we should do is she goes around with armed bodyguards, like you have never seen before. I think that her bodyguards should disarm, right? Right? Think they should disarm. Immediately, what do you think?”
“It will be very dangerous,” the billionaire businessman added.
