Kurdish official: Top islamic State leader still hiding in Mosul
Erbil: Leader of the Islamic State group Abu Bakr Baghdadi is still hiding in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, Fuad Hussein, chief of Massoud Barzani’ office, said. “Baghdadi is there and, if he is killed, it will mean the collapse of the whole [IS] system,” Hussein told the Independent media outlet on Tuesday citing Iraqi government sources. He noted that after Baghdadi’s death IS militants would have to choose a new leader amid the ongoing battle for Mosul but any new leader would not have authority and prestige of Baghdadi. Hussein also said that the presence of Baghdadi in Mosul would complicate the operation aimed at liberation of the city as IS militants would fight to death to defend their leader. “It is obvious that they will lose, but not how long this will take to happen,” he added. |
KDP head of foreign relations says Kurdish Peshmerga forces ‘done their part’ in Mosul
Erbil: The Kurdish Peshmerga have “done their part,” taking responsibility for clearing Islamic State from the outskirts of Mosul and now the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is waiting for Iraqi forces to enter the city with support of coalition forces, said Hemin Hawrami, head of foreign relations for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). The fight for Mosul is one that IS knows they are going to lose. Therefore, their plan has been to make reclaiming the territory as difficult as possible for Kurdish and Iraqi forces, Hawrami said, adding that the Peshmerga have demined 14,000 explosives so far.
