Yazidis mark their return to Bashiqa with ritual ceremonies
Bashiqa: A number of Yazidi Kurds returned to the liberated town of Bashiqa on Friday expressing happiness with holding their ritual ceremonies inside the town for the first time in more than two years. Kurdish Peshmerga fighters liberated the town on Monday from Islamic State IS but sporadic clashes continued with remaining militants until Thursday morning. Lying only 20 kilometers northeast of central Mosul, Bashiqa had a diverse population with a majority of Yazidis and Shabaks and a minority of Assyrians and Arabs, leading it to be often described as ‘the little Iraq.’ Bashiqa, the latest town lost by IS to Peshmerga forces, gets its name from the words Bet and Ashiqa meaning ‘house of lovers,’ according to one possible source for the town’s name. |
Baghdad sends 23 Billion IQD to Erbil in Humanitarian Response
The Iraqi government has sent 20 billion Iraqi Dinars to Erbil province in Kurdistan Region as financial aid to help the local government with the huge number of IDPs and refugees settling there. Erbil Governor Nawzad Hadi on Friday confirmed to Kurdistan24 that the 20 billion IQD has been received and they are awaiting a further financial support of three billion IQDs. The fund is a humanitarian response to the flow of new IDPs as the Mosul operation continues. Thousands of civilians have so far been displaced due to the recent military confrontations and many more are expected to arrive soon, mainly to the Kurdistan Region.
